RE: Nitrogen in tires

3% mileage improvement? How many miles does the average Joe put on an RV in a year? 5-8k? Half that? 3% increase at maybe 10 MPG? Not much of a savings over time. Longer tire life? When was the last time anyone ever wore out a set of tires on an RV? Most have lots of tread left but have to replace due to age.

RE: Convenience Food

I have a couple of 1 skillet meals I like to make Quick recipe #1: Brown a pound of ground meat with some diced up onions, season with some black pepper and just a little salt. Drain. Add 2 cups of water, a package of onion soup mix, and a cup of uncooked rice. Mix well. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes until the rice is cooked. You can adjust the recipe by adding mushrooms, more seasonings, etc, but this is a good starting point that takes about 30 minutes and one skillet. Got a question for you -- since DH doesn't like mushrooms, what else might you add to this? I made it last night, and it seemed like it needed something else, but I just couldn't decide what. We thought maybe canned tomatoes?? Thanks, Vickie You know, I haven't thought about adding some tomatoes. That might be pretty good. I'm thinking about trying it again, but instead of the onion soup mix, using a can of some other type of soup and 1 can of water. I'm also wondering if instead of rice, maybe some OreIda breakfast potatoes (the little cubed ones). I keep telling my wife that I think I could improve the recipe, but she likes it as is. Whart a delimma... I guess it's like Emeril always says - We're not building rocket ships, it's just food. That said, I like the chicken recipe better than this one. I've got another recipe called Mrs Texas Casserole. I'll try to post the recipe tomorrow in a new post. Also quick and easy.

RE: Convenience Food

we tried the Stouffers chicken enchiladas earlier this week. Just pop it in the oven, bake an hour, then remove the lid and let it go another 20 minutes. Similar to the lasagna, and quite good. Cook a can of pinto beans to go with it and you are set (Mexican rice is in the pan with the enchiladas).

RE: Fuel efficency experiment

Lots of people drive 80mph in TX, but not that many. I set my cruise on 70 on my last trip (Interstate highway only) and I was surprised how many people I still had to pass up (I'm normally a 75 mph guy). Many of the people were driving 65 mph or so. That was the most stressful trip I've made because you aren't fast enough to ride mostly in the left lane, and you are too fast to ride much in the right lane. You constantly catch people and then have to wait for an opening to move left, make your pass, then move right again. The worst thing about TX is all of the people that drive whatever speed they are going to drive and they do it in the left lane, refusing to move right for slower cars to pass. Don't flame me, but they all seemed to be either immigrants or African American women. Not saying all of them drive that way, but it was enough of those particular groups driving slower than the flow in the left lane for me to notice the trend. I would think that 60mph in the right lane would be pretty enjoyable because you will have slowed down enough that you aren't constantly catching up with slower traffic and trying to pass them., allowing you to pretty much stay in the right lane. I think I might try that on my next trip.

You can adjust the recipe by adding mushrooms, more seasonings, etc, but this is a good starting point that takes about 30 minutes and one skillet. Quick recipe #2 Cube 2-4 chicken breasts, season with salt & pepper, and brown in a little olove oil with some onion and a little garlic. Add some sliced up fresh mushrooms, a can of diced tomatoes (don't drain - I use petite diced), and let simmer a couple of minutes (might need 2 cans of tomatoes if using 4 breasts and you like tomatoes). Break up some angel hair pasta and add it to the skillet, stirring to get it mixed into the liquid. Cover and let it simmer / steam on low for a few minutes intil the pasta is done. You could use different types of pasta, but other types require more liquid and longer cooking time, so you would need to either pre-cook the pasta or adjust (add) liquid accordingly. You could even add some cut up brocolli to the mix and let it steam together, but I prefer to cook my veggies separately Want even cheaper and easier: Cook one box of Kraft Mac & cheese according to the directions. Mix into a greased baking disk with a can of cooked, chunk chicken. Cover with crumbled Ritz crackers and back at 300-350 for 20 minutes, just to make sure all is hot. My 4 yr old loves this, and my wife and I like it too. I like to cook, and am capable of making HUGE messes in the kitchen by cooking big meals. With both the wife and I working, and the kids in daycare all day, it's hard to cook a big meal and make a big mess during the week. I tend to make stuff up on the fly when I get in the kitchen. Some things work out, some aren't any good. These all worked out fine and my wife askes for them regularly, so they must be ok. View these as the starting point and customize to suit your taste (I rarely make it the same every time)

RE: Anti sway or not?

good advice, but if you are towing a 31 ft trailer with a 1/2ton with no weight distribution and no sway control, I have to wonder... Do you have a brake controller? Gotta stop that baby also...

RE: Flow master

My Bro-in-law put FlowMaster on his 5.3l 2001 Tahoe the week eh bought it. The truck sounded mean when he started it up, but after my wife and I took a 6 hour trip with he and his wife, I vowed never to ride in the backseat again. The drone that resonated through the rear of the truck at highway speed was unbearable. I expect that you could record that sound and then use it to torture prisoners if you wanted to. I don't think he noticed any measurable difference in mileage. I also had a 2001 Tahoe we bought about the same time that had the stock exhaust. We both sold them in the last year with over 100k miles on each, and my factory exhaust was still in fine shape. Flowmaster may last longer, but I expect the factory setup would have lasted 10 years or more. Bottom line, buy it for the sound if that's what you like, not the increased performance.

RE: Colorado hiking during hunting season

To add to that thought, many of the hunters will be out of state folks who likely have waited for years to draw a tag (not cheap), then spent big bucks for the trip to Colorado, likely used up their last vacation time of the year, etc, etc. What I'm saying is that they have a pile of time, effort, and money tied up in this hunt. PLEASE DO NOT go walking through a hunting area in the middle of hunting season. Hunting season only lasts a couple of months at the most, and the other 10 months of the year the park is wide open for other recreation (hiking, photos, etc, etc). Nowhere in the hunting regs does the purchase of a hunting license give you exclusive use of public lands. September and October are two of the finest camping and hiking months here in Colorado. No, you can't have exclusive use! Like I said, a person is completely within their rights to go for a walk, but prudence requires that you weigh all of the risks (or at least be aware of them). You'll likely be fine going for your walk, just wanted the OP to know what they could encounter. Also, while purchase of a hunting license doesn't guarantee you exclusive use of public lands, I understand that some if not all of the licenses are issued limiting the hunter to certain areas. For what's it's worth, I've never hunted Colorado. I hunt in TX. No hikers, usually I'm the only one there.

RE: Colorado hiking during hunting season

This is the best advice. You can also ruin the hunt as well. Turn the tables around as if you were the one hunting. How would you feel if you spent the morning tracking the game (deer, elk, etc.) and all of a sudden, somebody with bells on their clothing walks by and spooks the game. You would be mad at that person for waisting your morning. Maybe thats why hikers get shot. I would be a little more than upset if I had been tracking a big buck for a couple of days and some nit-wit walks down the trail making all kinds of noise. hpk To add to that thought, many of the hunters will be out of state folks who likely have waited for years to draw a tag (not cheap), then spent big bucks for the trip to Colorado, likely used up their last vacation time of the year, etc, etc. Picture the guy on the last day of a week long hunt, nothing but sore feet and frustration to show for his efforts. He finally sees a big elk, and as he moves into position to seal the deal, someone with bright orange and bells on comes walking through the area and spooks the elk. You might be well within your rights, but you have just created a potentially unsafe situation for yourself that could be avoided. You might be right, but you could also end up dead, and it would be spring thaw before you were ever found, and the hunter will be long gone. 99.999% of hunters are safe people (I am one of them), and wouldn't be a problem, but the one loose cannon is the guy that scares the stuffing out of me. If you want to walk, please stick to the access roads and not out on the small trails and back country.

RE: Chipmunks

kaydeejay, Chipmunks can't resist eating the gum and when they do it plays havoc with their digestive system. John Doesn't seem very sporting... I'd rather just shoot them.

RE: Suburban / Expidition MPG

I've got an '03 Expedition 5.4 and 3.73 that the wife drives daily. Around town with a heavy foot, she averages 13.6 consistently (in Houston there is some interstate and 80 mph mixed in with the "around town"). On the freeway with the cruise set at 70 and no head wind, the best I ever got was 19.2, with as low as 15.5 or so driving 75 with a little wind. Here's an interesting thing that should be pointed out. My bro-in-law (engineer) told me that on their 2 Expeditions (both 2003 models with 5.4, 3.73) that the Michelin LTX tires cost him a mpg or so over the factory Continentals. I think he has Coopers now and runs at max PSI and gets consistently just over 20mpg running the speed limit I never really checked before I put my Michelin's on at 15k miles. The Continentals were junk and cupped severely. I couldn't stand the vibration anymore, so I bought the Michelin's and have never had another problem. I keep the tires at 32 psi because my butt tells me the ride is slightly better. I suspect the Michelin tires along with slightly lower air pressure do cost me some mileage, but not enough to make a huge difference to me.

RE: Your hometown favorite Hamburger and Hot Dog place! Pics!

In Lafayette, LA, where I grew up, the place to go was either Judice Inn or Pete's. Both are truly local establishments. When I lived in Lake Charles, we usually went to Novrozsky's. In Houston, we usually just go to Fuddruckers

RE: Remove 454 and install 7.3 IDI Diesel

pretty neat idea, but those 7.3's were pretty loud. That's gonna be a BUNCH of racket right underneath you. Apologies for not being able to offer any constructive advice on the actual swap, but would love to see pics of the progress and hear about your results.

RE: Junk Email

I keep 2 e-mail addresses. One is for family and friends that I correspond with, and the other is the one is a Yahoo account I use when signing up online or give to people that I'm not close with. My yahoo account is full of junk mail constantly, and I browse it for decent mail once every couple of weeks. My regular e-mail that I check often only has "good" e-mail. You might keep the old one, but create a new one that you only give to regular contacts.
